Supporting independent journalism in Ukraine

The following was issued as a joint press launch on Monday seventh September 2026 from WAN-IFRA, AIRPPU, and OpenAI.

The Newsroom AI Masterclass Series and Newsroom AI Catalyst assist Ukraine’s independent information sector with a concentrate on AI adoption, innovation, and resilience.

OpenAI, WAN-IFRA, and the Association of Independent Regional Press Publishers of Ukraine (AIRPPU) have introduced a brand new initiative to assist and strengthen Ukrainian information publishers by constructing sensible synthetic intelligence capabilities and accelerating innovation throughout their organisations. During a time of continued battle and unrest, the brand new initiative—developed by AIRPPU in partnership with WAN-IFRA and OpenAI—goals to assist information organisations harness the alternatives of synthetic intelligence to strengthen the sustainability, effectivity, and resilience of independent journalism.

The programme combines two complementary elements:

  • Newsroom AI, supporting information organisations chosen by AIRPPU in creating and implementing AI-driven newsroom initiatives, and;
  • Business Transformation, supporting AI-driven industrial and operational transformation initiatives.

The Newsroom AI Masterclass Series will construct on prior profitable initiatives of WAN-IFRA and OpenAI and produce collectively worldwide consultants and practitioners to share sensible information, case research, and implementation methods. The matters span a broad vary of vital information organisation priorities, together with editorial workflows, viewers engagement, product improvement, income era, organisational change, and accountable AI adoption.

Building on this basis, the Newsroom AI Catalyst will present deeper, hands-on assist to 10 taking part Ukrainian information organisations as they establish high-impact use instances, develop implementation roadmaps, and pilot AI-enabled options tailor-made to their particular wants.

All organisations taking part in the programme will even obtain credit to OpenAI’s API to facilitate the event of bespoke newsroom options.

The programme builds on WAN-IFRA’s intensive world work supporting AI adoption in information organisations—together with management programmes, business analysis, peer-learning communities, and sensible implementation initiatives—and OpenAI’s continued partnership with information organisations all over the world to assist assist their very important missions.

The affiliation helps media sustainability, skilled journalism, and press freedom via capacity-building programmes, emergency assist, innovation initiatives, and worldwide partnerships, working with independent information organisations throughout the nation.
